Charged Particle Motion in Capacitor
This simulation shows the motion and energy of a charged particle in a uniform electric field (capacitor).
You can set the particle's charge, mass, initial position, and velocity, as well as the electric field strength.
Notice that the total energy is constant. The kinetic energy converts into potential energy and vice versa.

Energy conservation can be used to solve many problems quickly. For example, choose one of the pre-entered cases:
-
Case #1: a positively charged particle is launched toward the positive plate. The electric field pushes it backward to the negative plate, causing it to slow down and reverse it's direction and eventually hit the negative plate.
-
Case #2: positive charge released at middle of capacitor at rest
-
Case #3: negative charge released at middle of capacitor at rest
Try changing the initial conditions (velocity, position, charge, electric field) and see what happens to the solution!!
